As utility networks evolve to support increasing demands for bandwidth, lower latency, and higher data throughput, it is critical to understand both the current landscape and the direction of future technologies. This session will explore the foundational elements of utility applications and protocols, the communication media used to transmit operational data, and the methods that support these systems today. Attendees will gain insights into the transformation toward technology-agnostic networks, incorporating both fiber and wireless solutions such as Private LTE and Passive Optical Networks (PON). The session will also address how utilities can prepare for emerging technologies such as AMI 2.0, fiber-to-the-meter, and AI-driven decision-making. Emphasis will be placed on designing adaptable, future-ready network architectures that support a wide range of utility use cases without being bound to a single vendor or platform.

Tim is an industry expert in telecommunications network architecture,
engineering, and operations, with over 45 years in the Service Provider
industry. Tim’s focus is the delivery and operation of Utility Grade fiber
optic networks and broadband services.
His fiber optic experience began in 1985 at MCI (Verizon). During his
twenty-seven (27) years at MCI/Verizon, Tim was responsible for
Technical Operations throughout a multistate area in the Southeast
US. Tim’s expertise spans across all disciplines in the
telecommunications industry, including OSP engineering, design, and
maintenance; inside plant/central office engineering, design, and
maintenance. However, his core competencies are transport
engineering, design, and maintenance; long-haul and ultra-long-haul
transmissions; fiber optic cable splicing; ethernet switching and core
network routing, and data center environments. In his previous
positions, Tim was responsible for Sales Engineering, Technical
Solutions Engineering, and Applications Engineering for North and
South America. Tim’s previous experience also includes Program
Management for EF&I services. Additionally, Tim has multiple years of
experience on Fixed Wireless, and he holds an FCC General
