FCC chair takes aim at deepfakes, broadband competition
|
As chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission, Jessica Rosenworcel plays a huge, if largely hidden, role in the vast majority of Americans’ daily lives.
The FCC oversees wireless and wireline communications networks and how the electromagnetic spectrum in the United States is divvied up between government, corporate and public users. Established during the Franklin Roosevelt administration to regulate the nation’s telephone and broadcast networks, the agency now plays a key role in determining how you connect to the internet, and how many and what kind of providers you can choose from to make that connection. Starlink hits 4 million subscribers
|
SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet network is expected to hit a new customer milestone this week, company President Gwynne Shotwell told Texas legislators on Tuesday.
“This week, by the way, we will pass 4 million customers for Starlink, which is quite exciting,” she said while testifying before a state House Appropriations Committee meeting. (The milestone was confirmed by SpaceX on Thursday.) Read More

Majority of BEAD money may not hit until 2026
|
- A panel at the upcoming Broadband Nation Expo will discuss when BEAD money will start flowing
- Realistically, most early states may not issue money to subgrantees until fall 2025
- The panel will also talk about important BEAD milestones still to be hit
When will the BEAD money start flowing? That is the billion-dollar question — pun intended. Most states have had their Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 processes approved by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), according to NTIA’s Progress Dashboard. Vol. 1 is focused on the mapping challenge process, and Vol. 2 consists of the remainder of the state’s BEAD implementation plan. Yet, the wait continues. Read More

Spectrum, systems, security, skills – six barriers to scale private 5G in Industry 4.0
|
In researching a new editorial report, out this month, about the state of private 5G in Industry 4.0, RCR Wireless asked around about the biggest impediments to make enterprise-owned 5G scale in industrial venues. Among the responses, Nokia and Siemens separately compiled a list of five blockers, as of today, to its easy sale and scale. Their answers matched, more or less; and have, in turn, been crossed and compiled into a single list – of six barriers to scale. Read More

Could Data Centers be the Catalyst for Modernizing the U.S. Electric Grid?
|
The new age of rising electricity demand tests supply response. The Industrial Revolution – both as an historic event and a concept – irreversibly tied economic growth with energy demand, with new factories and machinery creating a global race for securing energy supplies.1
Start-up activities, related to new industrial or economic cycles, tend to inflate energy intensity. Competition and the need to reduce product input costs eventually flatten, then reduce the amount of energy consumed to achieve the same level of output. Read More

Digital Economy meets Energy Transition: Data Centers as an Asset in Energy Flexibility and Virtual Power Plants (VPPs)
|
Historically, the power industry has experienced relatively marginal demand fluctuations. However, the recent surge in AI and the subsequent skyrocketing demand for data center services have introduced a significant new factor and they are the ‘talk of the town’ amongst utility executives.
