New National Broadband Map Update v5, Data as of June 2024
A few days ago, the FCC released the 5th version of the National Broadband Map, with data as of June 2024. At a high level, the trend continues of fewer and fewer unserved and underserved locations: in the previous version, 8.8 million locations were unserved or unserved. Now, with six months more data, we’re down to 7.5 million locations needing better broadband service. That’s an 15% decrease over one six-month period. And a 37% decrease from the first BDC broadband map 18 months ago. Read More
Is it Too Late to Change BEAD?
There has been a lot of speculation since the election that the BEAD grant program is going to get revamped. I’ve heard speculation that a lot more money might go to satellite broadband. Unlicensed Use of the 6 GHz Band
In 2023, the Commission expanded 6 GHz band unlicensed use to permit an additional
class of unlicensed access points—very low power (VLP) devices. VLP devices are intended to provide high data rate connections across short distances that can support cutting-edge applications, such as augmented and virtual reality and body-worn technologies. The Third Report and Order will expand unlicensed use of the 6 GHz band by permitting VLP device operation in two additional portions of the band. This action will make a contiguous 1200 megahertz of spectrum between 5.925-7.125 GHz available for high throughput, low latency VLP devices, which will facilitate more intensive use of limited spectrum resources and make exciting new technologies available to American consumers, while ensuring that incumbent services are protected from harmful interference. Read More

Spending on local transmission projects has been increasing across the United States with little regulatory oversight, according to a report from RMI.
In New England, for example, annual spending on local transmission projects, called asset condition projects in the region, increased eight-fold from 2016 to nearly $800 million in 2023, RMI, a clean energy think tank, said in its report, Mind the Regulatory Gap: How to Enhance Local Transmission Oversight. Read More
