DoD’s latest spectrum proposal is not good for CBRS
AT&T floated a proposal last fall to move the Citizens Broadband Radio Services (CBRS) from the middle of the 3 GHz band to the lower part of the band, and it looks like the Department of Defense (DoD) is on board with that plan, according to New Street Research (NSR) analysis. Read More

Full Speed Ahead
State Broadband Offices have seemingly aligned to put pressure on the federal government to get the BEAD awards made and the construction process started this year. While there might be a few exceptions, most State Broadband Offices have accelerated the grant review process and are either ready to make BEAD awards now or soon will be in a position to do so. Read More
When You Wish Upon a Star(link)
Elon Musk’s satellite broadband company – Starlink – is poised to receive billions of dollars in federal subsidies should the recently announced changes to the $42.5 billion Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) program be approved by Congress. While presented to the public as a way to end the digital divide – the divide between those who have access to high speed internet “broadband” and those who don’t – these changes will end up subsidizing a technology that offers only “good enough” connectivity and risks creating a new digital divide as parts of the country go to satellite while others move to fiber optics. Read More

While the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) National Broadband Maps spotlight underserved areas across the nation as Congress continues to funnel billions into improving internet connectivity – millions of Americans still aren’t seeing benefits of that funding due in part to the need for better mapping data and greater coordination across Federal agencies. Read More

A Data Center Middle-Mile Solution Could Also Serve Rural Broadband Providers
The middle mile has been a problem for rural broadband service providers (BSPs) since early DSL services in the 1990s. Even today, the distance between a rural BSP’s service area to the nearest connection to the core network could be hundreds of miles. Establishing a fiber link to the core network is costly, and, with the distances involved, latency will creep into the service no matter how fast the last-mile, fiber-to-the-home speeds might be. Read More
