LCRA and UTC Provide Utility Perspectives at 6G Summit
Last week, representatives from LCRA and UTC participated on a panel session on “6G for the Utilities Industry” during a 6G Summit as part of Network X Americas in Irving, Texas. During the session, LCRA and UTC described how utilities like LCRA are expanding the capacity of their private internal communications networks, including by deploying private LTE systems. As UTC and LCRA explained, the capabilities of LTE and other advanced communications networks will help to support a variety of applications, including mission critical push-to-talk voice, as well as AMI 2.0 and other grid modernization initiatives. LCRA and UTC also explained that the capability of network slicing through 6G will help to enable greater security and prioritization of mission critical communications. That said, UTC and LCRA stated that it is important for utilities to leverage the commercial market to access the ecosystem of standardized equipment, which is why utilities and UTC are engaging with 3GPP on the development of standards to meet utility requirements for reliability and resilience, as well as capacity. The panel session also included representatives from Vodaphone, who emphasized the network slicing capabilities of 6G for utilities, and the panel session was moderated by representatives from the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) NextG Alliance, who seek to collaborate with utilities to develop a set of utility requirements for commercial wireless services providers.
