UTC supports 5/5 megahertz operations in the 896–901/935–940 MHz band
UTC filed comments in support of the Commission’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking proposing to allow 5/5 megahertz operations in the 896–901/935–940 MHz band (900 MHz band).  UTC’s comments reiterated its previously-filed comments in support of the underlying petition for rulemaking that was filed in April 2024.  UTC stated that the NPRM is an important step that builds upon the Commission’s 2020 Report and Order that enabled utilities to operate 3/3 megahertz broadband systems subject to a negotiated framework for clearing or protecting incumbent narrowband systems in the 900 MHz band.  UTC emphasize that utilities need access to additional bandwidth to support increasing communications requirements for a variety of utility applications, including smart grid and security applications.  UTC also supported the FCC’s proposal to adopt a similar optional voluntary negotiation-based framework for allowing 5/5 megahertz operations in the 900 MHz band, as part of the NPRM.  Finally, UTC urged the Commission to consider partially lifting the freeze on application for new or modified facilities to expand incumbent operations in the 900 MHz band.
