Hurricanes Helene and Milton that ravaged the Southeast between late September and early October have resulted in over 200 deaths and have caused an estimated $50 billion in damage and $250 billion in economic losses.
The networks of electric utilities have been severely damaged by the hurricanes’ strong winds and exceptional amounts of rain. At the top of their destructive powers affecting 10 states, Helene caused outages for almost 6 million people while Milton left over 3 million people temporarily disconnected. UTC members in the affected areas had prepared their response strategies beforehand and began restoring power and rebuilding the networks as soon as it was safe for the crews to do so. The response effort also highlighted the value of the mutual help system amongst electric utilities. For each disaster event, more than 50,000 personnel from up to 46 states and the District of Columbia were deployed to facilitate safe, efficient and timely restoration of services.
UTC is asking you to respond to this survey by Friday, November 15 to report on utility communications during response and restoration efforts after Hurricanes Helene and Milton and share your lessons learned.
The survey consists of 19 questions and will take under 10 minutes.
