Substation automation technologies have vastly evolved over the last few decades. With rapid advancements in microprocessor-based equipment, system integrators are challenged to provide cost-effective solutions with a high degree of reliability and availability to ensure business continuity within their organization. To meet this goal, system integrators typically consider the ultimate capacity of the station with emphasis on selecting components with proven long product life support that are scalable and adaptable to different operating conditions. This presentation will provide a brief history of substation automation, an overview of the current design trends to increase the awareness of the assets, and the challenges moving forward with emerging technologies.
